Trailwalker Check 5: Hydration system

Friday, September 30, 2005

Splash2
there's nothing more important that a proper hydration system. These days, we are all so lucky to have the hydration packs and tubing which makes life so much easier. i remember back in the days when i had a tough old Nalgene bottle and some iodine pills to last me through 2 weeks of river water. now, i can get some hi tech filtration, bug zappers, pour the purified water into the pack and suck from a drinking tube, taste free. I've been using a bladder from Platypus and quite happy with it. it's called the Big Zip, because the bladder bottom is formed by a tough ziploc and allows easier cleaning and putting ice cubes easily. the bladder is very tough and has never leaked on me thus far. i use it between my BLURR pack and my Arcteryx packs without any problems. the tubing is made of polyethylene and completely free from rubber taste. it supposedly resists bacterial growth as well. (never put juice or power drinks into the bladder, it will promote bacterial growth). the bite valve is leak free, and even when pressure is put onto the bladder the valve remains shut. it's my first bladder system, but after a lot of research with different brands, i've decided to go with Platypus. Simple, functional and cheap. i have a 2L system as it's possible to fill it up or leave it at 1L depending. but you can't overfill a 1L bladder to 2L... makes sense? [equipbug]

Reviewed: Grippy pencil and pen

Thursday, September 29, 2005

Faber Castell's Grip 2001 pencil has been popular with artists and students alike. the triangular design and rubber grip along it's border make the pen very easy to hold. The brand new Grip 2011 now comes in the same ergonomic design as a mechanical pencil (0.7mm) and ball point pen. from the looks of these photos, it appears to be made of metal, but in fact it is made of a light plastic. the 2011 comes in 3 shades of grey, from silvery to near black. the plastic pen costs about 10USD. it is made in germany, but still feels a but light for my preference. i ended up buying it for the secure grip as taking a medical history is quite a tiring task at times. this is a decent pen for those who want a combination of style and function, but if you are looking for a high end pen, look else where. Reviewed: Scent of Passion

Ever since i received a Thai scented candle as a gift last year, i've been using scented candles since. I still prefer the incense because of the smoky trail it leaves behind, but the smell of fruity freshness is definitely better than most smoky temple halls. Fruits & Passion's Pear Linden scented candles are powerful and gets the job done. There are over 10 different smells to choose from, all bearing flowers or fruits. some are a bit more feminine while others are generally pleasant. The candles are sealed tightly in a corked top, so that the oily wax does not leak out. when i opened my candle, it was a lot more messy than i expected because these candles are soaked in oil. otherwise, i would recommend them for anyone who wants to add a bit of freshness to their room, along with a candle lit aura.
