Portable Water: just add water.

i've been out camping and in desperate need of drinking water. what can i do? well, before i had the Hiker by Katadyn, i had to boil up some water and wait for it to cool down. my other option was to use the iodine tablets which kill pretty much everything in the water except for the viruses, but turns nice crystal spring into nasty iodine yellow water. so now that i have the Hiker filter, i can trust the carbon filter to take out everything including cryptosporidia, giardia, bateria including the feared E. Coli, and other baddies. filters also take out dirt, and other bad tastes in the water, making it drinkable and taste... well, like water. it does not remove viruses how ever, so it would be wise to use it in a place you are confident that is virus free. otherwise you can use it in combination with other water treatments to make drinking water completely safe. for example, the MSR Miox, which uses a salt tablet mixed into water to make a brine solution and zapped with electricity. the cocktail can be poured into 4 liters of water to zap everything dead, including viruses. unfortunately, it will take around 4 hours to completely kill off crypto. so when used in combination, this would be one sick set up... anywhere anyplace. so when i go camping, i take along the Hiker, but i would take it for traveling as well, just in case.
